History of Phuket City HallConstruction of Phuket City Hall (formerly called Chaolaung Administration Hall) was finished in A.D. 1913 during the period of Phraya Rasadanupradit Mahisornpakdee (Kor Sim Bee Na Ranong) who was Phuket Lord Lieutenant from 1907 to 1913. Phraya Rasadanupradit requested Tungka Compound Company construct the Phuket City Hall in exchange for permission to mine in the area in front of where Phuket's Post Office is now located. Italian architect was commissioned to design and construct the building. King Rama VI chaired the opening and inauguration of Phuket City Hall on April 22, 1917.
Phuket City Hall was the first steal reinforced building in Thailand. It became well known at that time because of its distinctive decoration. It has two storeys and the decorations are a tulip-like teak perforated design on the doors of second storey. On the first floor the design has the tulips in vases and there are the air vents above. The unusual feature of Phuket City Hall is its 99 doors and only 2 windows. Phuket City Hall was registered as an ancient building by the Department of Fine Arts on May 10, 1977.
